Shruti is the foundation of Vedic knowledge. She represents a vast span of wisdom that cannot be defined in mathematical terms. Shruti was perceived by a select group of Vedic hermits known as Rishis.

Shruti introduced the Vedic Rishis to an immense reservoir of knowledge. The Vedic Rishis, a distinguished group of Aryans who underwent rigorous mental training, were the only ones capable of comprehending Shruti's utterances. While anyone could access Shruti's teachings, their understanding and interpretation of these profound ideas relied on the insights of the Rishis.

With their highly trained and disciplined minds, the Vedic Rishis grasped the profound knowledge imparted by Shruti. They then articulated this knowledge in a linguistic form, which made it both tangible and beautiful. Subsequently, the Vedic Saints gave voice to this linguistic expression received from Shruti. However, the originator of this boundless wisdom is not attributed to any individual; instead, many prefer to attribute it to a Divine Being.

Shruti transmitted the gems and crystals of knowledge to the Vedic Rishis, who expressed that expertise in a language known as Vedic Sanskrit. The Vedic Rishis composed hymns referred to as Richas.

Through their linguistic expression of the knowledge received from Shruti, the Vedic Rishis played a crucial role in the creation of the Vedas. Their disciplined minds and linguistic skills formed the foundation of these revered texts, which continue to be a source of wisdom and inspiration.

Each Veda consists of four sections: Samhita, Brahman, Aranyaka, and Upanishads. The four Vedas are the Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda.

The knowledge transmitted by Shruti in the form of Richas was analyzed by the Vedic Rishis over time. They engaged in discussions and debates about the meanings and implications of the Richas, providing their analyses and critiques. This process of analysis and critique is called Smriti. The Smritis, resulting from this intellectual discourse, bear the names of their authors, signifying their individual contributions to the understanding of Vedic knowledge.
